Transcript: SECOND VARIETY INTRODUCTION INTRODUCTION Second Variety is a novellete written by its author Phillip K. Dick. The novel was first published in May of 1953. The book follows the war between the United Nations and the Soviet Union where they fight via robots which were nicknamed "claws". There is a turn of events where the robots end up advancing by themselves and taking disguises as helpless figures and attack everyone. Tone The tone of the text is constant throughout the novel. It is realistic. The book never sugarcoats the reality of the situation of the characters. It is also serious as the situation that is occuring is a serious situation. Tone Elements of Science Fiction Elements To be able to recognize the elements of science fictions that are present in the novel we need to first define what science fiction is. Science fiction, shortened to si-fi, is a genre of fiction that tends to deal with futeristic concepts such as time travel, space travel, multiverses, advanced technology and extraterrestrial life. Advanced technology Advanced Technology "Claws", in the novel, are man made fighter robots in which their only purpose when created by the United Nations was to fight the war against the Soviet Union. This shows the advanced technology aspect of Science Fiction novels. When comparing modern war technology versus the claws it can be said without a doubt that the claws are much more advanced. The advancement in technology is apperent through the idea that the robots develop by themselves. Space travel Space Travel In the book, it says that the only people that were left on Earth were small isolated groups of survivors and soldiers. Most production was happening on the moon and the charcters in the novel were all hoping to locate the moon base so that they could all go to the moon. Literary Devices Devices IMAGERY Imagery "The Russian soldier made his way nervously up the ragged side of the hill, holding his gun ready. He glanced around him, licking his dry lips, his face set. From time to time he reached up a gloved hand and wiped perspiration from his neck, pushing down his coat collar." PERSONIFICATION Personification "They were living things, spinning, creeping, shaking themselves up suddenly from the gray ash and darting toward a man, climbing up him, rushing for his throat. And that was what they had been designed to do. Their job." Transcript: START! A DJ or "Disc Jockey" is aperson who plays recorded music and mixes two or more tracks or records. In 1857, a Frenchman, Leon Scott Invented the first phonoautograph. This device was used to record sound but with no way to playback. It was made of a wax cylinder with grooves on the outside. Soon Emile Berliner's Gramophone would replace it in 1887. The Gramophone also has grooves on it for recording only it's a plastic disc making it re-usable. Some time in Jamaica during the 50's some premotors who called themselves "Djs" would play two different songs on seperate Gramophones with a mix-board in the middle(third pic below). DJs and songs!
