Transcript: Common Core: Math Standards Reasons for Repelling CCSS Common Core State Standards These Standards define what students should understand and be able to do in their study of mathematics. These Standards endeavor to follow such a design, not only by stressing conceptual understanding of key ideas, but also by continually returning to organizing principles such as place value or the laws of arithmetic to structure those ideas. the Standards also lay out a vision of what it means to be a literate person in the twenty-first century. Just as students must learn to read, write, speak, listen, and use language effectively in a variety of content areas, so too must the Standards specify the literacy skills and understandings required for college and career readiness in multiple disciplines. Transcript: Common core state standards was a reform initiated in 1996 by a bi-partisan group of governors and corporate leaders who created an organization dedicated to supporting standards-based education reform efforts across the states. It was a collaborative effort by three groups..... Achieve National Governors Association + Council of Chief State School Officer, and finally created in 2010... The Common Core State Standards provide a consistent, clear understanding of what students are expected to learn, so teachers and parents know what they need to do to help them. They made the standards based on research both Nationally and Internationally. What are the expectations? CCSSO Goal With American students fully prepared for the future, our communities will be best positioned to compete successfully in the global economy. THE 45 states, the District of Columbia, four territories, and the Department of Defense Education Activity have adopted the CCSS. Who is responsible? What is common core? How will it work? Transcript: Prezi: Benefits and Downfalls It's like an open canvas where you can write all over it without worrying about fitting text into "boxes." So what are the downfalls? Kids don't have the ability to make an account. The kids don't have to save anywhere! Just like anything we use, there can be downfalls. I'm going to walk you through a basic Prezi, like I did with my students for their first practice run. There is NO layout....unless you choose one. How can we use this in the classroom?? 1. It's just like PowerPoint, but BETTER! 2. Motivational for the kids 3. User friendly for both you and the kids. You can play the presentation in an interesting way, with zooming in and out. No slide-by-slide presentations! It automatically saves for them, similar to Google Docs. Why Prezi? Some of the benefits Students need to plan with organization (flow map) It's user friendly and easy to manipulate text and the canvas Let's Practice! Once you play around a bit, you will see how easy it is to move and manipulate the objects and text in your presentation. It looks sharper and moves in a unique way. SATTER Associated Press LONDON (AP) -- Facial recognition technology being considered for London's 2012 Games is getting a workout in the wake of Britain's riots, a law enforcement official told The Associated Press on Thursday, with officers feeding photographs of suspects through Scotland Yard's newly updated face-matching program. The official said that the Metropolitan Police's sophisticated software was being used to help find those suspected of being involved in the worst unrest the force has faced in a generation, although he cautioned that police had a host of other strategies at their disposal. "A lot of tools are being used to hunt down these criminals, and that's just one of them," the official said on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak about an ongoing investigation. "The issue is that you have to have a good picture of a suspect and it is only useful if you have something to match it against. In other words, the suspect already has to have a previous criminal record." A press officer with Scotland Yard - who also spoke anonymously, in line with force policy - confirmed Thursday that facial recognition technology was at the police's disposal, although he gave few other details. He said that generally the technology would only be used to help identify those suspected of serious crimes, such as assault, and that in most cases disseminating photographs to the general public remains a far cheaper and more effective way of identifying people. To that end the police have released two dozen photos and videos to the picture-sharing website Flickr, where they've already gathered more than 400,000 hits. Some of those photographs have also been published by Britain's brash tabloid press. The Sun recently plastered them across its front page, along with a headline urging readers to report looters to the police. The photographs on Flickr are mainly grainy images pulled from closed circuit television cameras, which may not be of much use to face-matching software. But other pictures - taken by police surveillance teams, published in the media or snapped by passers-by - could provide higher-resolution images. The facial-recognition technology used by police treats the human face like a grid, measuring the distance between a person's nose, eyes, lips and other features. It has recently been upgraded, according to an article published last year in Scotland Yard's bimonthly magazine, "The Job." According to the March 2010 article, the new program has been shown to work far better than older versions of the technology. One expert cited by the article said it had shown promise in matching high-quality, face-on shots taken from surveillance photographs, mobile phones, passports or even off the Internet. Facial recognition technology is already widely employed by free-to-use websites such as Facebook and Google Inc.'s Picasa photo-sharing program. Such programs have been of increasing interest to authorities as well. A person with the Olympic planning committee recently told the AP that facial recognition software was being considered for use during the Olympic Games. He spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of security preparations. Give an example where the use of this technology would be acceptable and one where it would be unacceptable. Argumentation Authentic Tasks In most cases these four components are already used in your classroom. Common Core is simply making you conscious of these practices.
