Born Again

Transcript: The Repentance Reset Button Born Again Bishop Ignaty Brianchaninov left us the following precious instruction: "In order to live spiritually and draw breath from grace, we must continually exhale the ashes of sin." We sin almost constantly, if not in our deeds, then in our thoughts and feelings. Therefore it is essential to continually cleanse our souls. In the language of asceticism (teaching on religious struggle) it is known as "internal activity" or "attentiveness." To continually repent is to pay unceasing attention to one’s spiritual life, to assess and remove from it all that is questionable and foolish. This spiritual battle requires ability, God’s assistance, and constant prayer. As the holy Fathers of the Church write " It is pointless to weep over the sins of the past if we do not struggle with them in the present." Continual repentance or attentiveness is that poverty of spirit of which Christ speaks in the first Beatitude in His sermon on the mount. The call to such repentance is found throughout the Word of God and the texts of Orthodox worship. In a sense, all of the teaching of the Church is a single call to repentance in the most profound sense of that term, i.e. it is a call to rebirth, to a complete reassessment of all values, to a new understanding and vision of life in the light of Christ. Born Again? MY OWN PERSONAL SISYPHUS If not Us then Who? Oh, God! UNINTENTIONAL INTENTIONAL SEEN UNSEEN FAILURES MISSTEPS "Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin" "Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean; wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow. Make me to hear joy and gladness, that the bones which You have broken may rejoice. Hide Your face from my sins, and blot out all my iniquities. Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me." THE PSALM 50 CONUNDRUM For I acknowledge my transgressions, and my sin is ever before me. Against You, You only, have I sinned, and done this evil in Your sight that You may be found just when You speak, and blameless when You judge. (PSALM 50:3-4) Western/Protestant Christianity The phrase “born again Christian” is frequently misinterpreted. Looking at its primary reference, we see that its meaning is not about physical birth, but about experiencing a spiritual renewal. It is is an expression used by many Protestants to define the moment or process of fully accepting faith in Jesus Christ. It is an experience when the teachings of Christianity and Jesus become real, and the "born again" acquire a personal relationship with God. The term is originated from an incident in the New Testament in which the words of Jesus were not understood by a Jewish Pharisee, Nicodemus. Jesus replied, "Very truly I tell you, no one can see the kingdom of God unless they are born again." "How can someone be born when they are old?" Nicodemus asked. "Surely they cannot enter a second time into their mother's womb to be born!" Jesus answered, "Very truly I tell you, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless they are born of water and the Spirit." John 3:3-5 NIV Eastern/Orthodox Christianity The phrase “born again” also needs some tweaking, if not rescuing from its narrowly individualistic Evangelical environment. First of all, the word “again” [Greek anothen] in the phrase “born again” is better rendered “from above”, so that Christ is not counselling a repetition of the first birth, but a completely new kind of birth “from above”—i.e. from God, the phrase “above” being a Jewish circumlocution for the divine Name. Christ connects this rebirth with “water and the Spirit” (John 3:5), the water clearly being a reference to the water in which His disciples were immersed at baptism. This was the unanimous conclusion of the early church, and undergirds such references to baptism as found in St. Paul when he speaks of “the washing of rebirth” (Titus 3:5) and of Christians being “cleansed by the washing of water with the Word” (Ephesians 5:26).

Here are some- I think that this music video will help a lot of people relize how bad poverty actually is. It may make people want to help, knowing that people actually don't live like we do. Do your parents have a car? Do you eat 2 or more meals a day? Is the water that comes out of your tap at home clean? All of you said yes. Even if you don't have enough money to buy new clothes every school year, you are still in the top 3% wealthiest people in the world. That means 97% of the world has less than you. The fact that you are even alive past the age of 5 means that you are extremely rich! Most people in the world don't have what you have, even if you can't afford the latest iPhone. In the end of the music video, a little girl says ''they did this for us?" I found it sad that the girl couldn't even believe that she actually had a home and that people actually care. It makes me wonder if she grew up believing that people would never do anything that great for her. It's probably because she grew up watching her friends die all around her, and nobody helped them. This video is to encourage people to donate or help the less fortunate. I know it really impacted me. ? You can also participate in events such as: Here are some organizations that can help: This is a music video about the poverty in third-world countries, such as Indionisia or Thailand. This video takes place in Africa, where a lot of people go to bed hungry every night. The video shows statistics about poverty such as the man named Jose that only gets paid $2.45 a day. If you listen closely in the beginning, there are voices in the background that say: "Mommy? I don't want to sleep outside again! Why can't we have a real house?" Then the music starts and it shows all the horrors of poverty. Later, the band that is singing the song (Newsboys) helps to build a shelter for the people. That shows what people should be doing to help, and it calls people to action. when the house is finished, the voices start up again: "They did this for us?" That shows how much the people that are being helped are grateful. This music video is geared towards teens and young adults because it is a young band who sings a type of music that is popular with young people. This video is a national or somewhat-international video because it was made in the states but it is watched in places like Canada and Europe, mostly just Canada and the U.S. This video is effective because it has facts and it shows people actually helping out. It also shows how grateful the people that are being helped are, making people want to help out with the cause. ? ? SUMMERY! ? A new life in Christ How many of you know this book called "The very hungry Caterpillar"? "The Very Hungry Caterpillar" is a wonderful book by Eric Carle. The story begins with a tiny egg on a leaf in the light of the moon. On a Sunday morning, the warm sun came up and -- pop! -- out of the egg came a very small and very hungry caterpillar. He began to eat, and eat, and eat, but he was still hungry. Finally, he had eaten so much that he had a stomach ache! The next day was Sunday again. The caterpillar ate through a nice green leaf, and his stomach felt much better. He built a small house, called, a cocoon, around himself and stayed in there for more than two weeks. Then he nibbled a hole in the cocoon and pushed his way out. Guess what? He wasn't a caterpillar any more, he was now a beautiful butterfly. Open your Bible to... In reply Jesus declared, "I tell you the truth, no one can see the kingdom of God unless he is born again." John 3:3 (NIV) The story of "The Very Hungry Caterpillar" reminds me of the story of a man in our Bible lesson for today. It is the story of a man by the name of Nicodemus. Nicodemus was a very religious man and was a leader of the Pharisees. He spent a lot of time studying the Scriptures, but there was still much that he didn't understand. Nicodemus came to Jesus late one night, because he was hungry No, he wasn't looking for a late night snack, he was hungry for spiritual food. He was hungry for the truth about the kingdom of God. He came to Jesus because he had questions and he knew that Jesus would have the answers. "Teacher," Nicodemus said to Jesus, "we all know that God has sent you to teach us. No one could perform the miracles that you are doing if God were not with him." Jesus answered, "I tell you the truth, unless you are born again, you cannot see the Kingdom of God." "What do you mean?" exclaimed Nicodemus. "How can a man be born again?" Jesus went on to explain to Nicodemus that a person is "born again" when the Spirit of God enters into his heart. "Humans can reproduce human life, but the Holy Spirit gives birth to spiritual life. So don't be surprised when I say, 'You must be born again.'" "How are these things possible?" Nicodemus said scratching his head. Think about the story of "The Hungry Caterpillar?" When he came out of his cocoon, he wasn't an improved caterpillar, was he? No,he was a totally new creation. A butterfly! That's the way it is when we let Jesus into our heart. He doesn't just make us a better person. He makes us a new creation! News!
